Event - Open session SNP's Climate and Environment Group & Professor Paul Rogers

Hello everyone!

Please find below an open invitation from Roland Chaplain from the Scottish SNP Climate & Environment Group.

"There is worldwide concern as we see climate and nature crises coinciding with global political disarray.
In this vacuum of uncorrupted leaderships the SNP’s Climate and Environment Group are fortunate to have Professor Paul Rogers with us online from 7.30pm on Thursday Jan 30th .
The Institute of the Faculty of Actuaries and the University of Exeter have just (16.1.25) published "Planetary Solvency" ( Ecological Collapse and Economic Crash).
See also Planet: Critical podcast. with Sandy Trust, one of the report’s authors.
The Faculty of Actuaries report can be found here; the Planet Critical podcast can be found here.
For a slightly different perspective: see the Committee on Climate Change’s ‘Climate Change Risk Assessment’ – the 4th iteration of which is currently being written
This in turn feeds into the debate around shifting from flawed 'Net Zero ’ narratives to those of 'Climate Positive’

I first knew Paul when he was an Ecology (including human ecology) lecturer at Huddersfield Polytechnic.
Then and ever since he has been someone who has shown a particular talent for understanding the inter-relatedness of all areas of knowledge and species interaction.
Eventually this led him in the direction of developing an incredible depth of knowledge of the causes of human conflicts and how they might be resolvable.
Thus his ending up as Professor of Peace Studies at Bradford University who works closely with the Oxford Research Group.
He is an internationally respected expert (and broadcaster) on Middle East conflicts.
He has been an advisor to Party leaders including Jeremy Corbyn and Caroline Lucas.

His insights into the role of global warming on migration and as a contributor to so many human conflicts will be of particular interest to those who come to our meeting.
Questions about how to achieve 'system change ', 'just transition ', ‘Loss and Damages restorative climate justice’ , etc*.* will be very much in order.
Similarly questions around the rights/role of indigenous peoples, our right of self-determination, Greenland and the Arctic rim and Trump’s intended carve up with Putin, Gaza, etc.
The corrupting influence of corporate lobbying on all governments particularly from the fossil fuels and armaments sectors is another major concern for Paul.

He will be interested in hearing our perspectives on wellbeing economics and the way it and republicanism are providing a rallying point potentially to take support for independence above 65%.
The Believe In Scotland call for power to transfer to citizens’/constitutional assemblies, using sortition to determine makeup, is particularly relevant at a time when the electorate are increasingly mistrustful of career politicians.
And finally, last but not least, I’m sure there’ll be discussion of the role of 'civic society ’ globally in pressing governments to make COP30 in Brazil the first ever 'Peoples COP ’ - i.e one not dominated by corporate lobbyists.

Please share information about this open to all online meeting as widely as possible.
Do get back to me if you want further information.
