April 16 learning session: Beyond Nature-based Solutions, with the COEVOLVERS Living Labs

Join us for our 12th learning session on Thursday, April 16 at 4 pm CET | 3 pm GMT | 10 am EDT | 7 am PDT | 7:30 pm IST.

What if nature-based solutions weren’t primarily about serving human needs, but about co-creating multispecies communities where care and cohabitation shape how we design and inhabit places?

Nature-based solutions (NbS) typically follow a technocratic approach, prioritizing human interests even when participatory methods are used. But what happens when we shift perspective: viewing NbS not as technical fixes but as opportunities for cultivating relationships with the more-than-human?

In this learning session, we’ll explore how the COEVOLVERS project is (re)searching for a different, co-evolutionary approach to NbS through seven Living Labs across Europe. We’ll focus specifically on the concept of “aesthetics of care” - understanding care as something embodied and relational, emerging from how humans and other beings actually interact and share space.

Rather than treating humans as prime stakeholders, this approach asks:

  • What does this place need to support multispecies communities?

  • How can we design in ways that foster genuine cohabitation?

  • What happens when we develop identities and relationships that extend beyond the human?

  • And how can art-based methods support this kind of work?

Our speaker Cartsen Herrmann-Pillath will bring fresh insights from Molentargius Park in Cagliari, Italy—one of the COEVOLVERS Living Labs. In the very week of our session, Carsten will be on-site with the Living Lab team exploring how aesthetics of care actually manifests in practice.

Join us for this timely session, and bring your questions and reflections on what it means to design with care for multispecies communities!
